Tomatoes – when you do it right, it seems so easy. The first year, we had such a huge bounty, we were giving away tomatoes to all of the neighbors, work, and relatives. This year, we have not had much success and our crop has suffered from blossom end rot. That is a link for some “emergency fixes” for that type of problem. Probably because of the heat and inconsistent rainfall and watering on my part. It could also be because of a lack of calcium. We have jalapenos that have also suffered, and so we just cut the bottoms off.
As stated in earlier posts, we were late to the gardening game this year. There are four tomato plants in the raised beds and there are green tomatoes on the vines. The first few were not very attractive. A couple of have been taken inside to see if and when the tomatoes will ripen. Might try the brown bag trick. Do you know it? Here’s a link in case you do not!
Another trick I’ll be trying next year will be the copper wire trick. This was also picked up on the same PBS Master Gardener show, and I’ve seen it on YouTube as well. This is also referred to as “electroculture” – kind of like grounding when you walk across your yard barefoot and the health benefits of doing such a practice. Plants also need to be “grounded”. Take advantage of all of the negative and positive ions surrounding us daily!
